Vitamin B6 Important for Intestinal Health

In a recently published study, researchers revealed that sufficient intake of vitamin B6 is associated with enhanced intestinal health and comfort. Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is a water-soluble vitamin that is important for protein metabolism, red blood cell metabolism, immune function, and blood sugar balancing.

This study investigated the relationship between intestinal symptoms such as cramping, bloating, discomfort, occasional diarrhea, and occasional constipation and intake of vitamin B6. The subjects recorded intestinal symptoms daily for 7 days, and the severity was calculated. The subjects also recorded dietary intake for the same 7 days. Dietary intake was evaluated for intake of specific food groups and specific nutrients.

The study showed that the only component of the diet that correlated with symptom severity was vitamin B6. Compared to the recommended daily intake of vitamin B6 of 1.6 mg/day for men and 1.2 mg/day for women, these subjects had a median intake of vitamin B6 of 0.9 mg/day. The score for intestinal symptoms was inversely associated with vitamin B6 intake, meaning the lower the vitamin B6 intake, the higher the symptom score was for intestinal symptoms.

The researchers concluded that the association between low vitamin B6 intake and intestinal health may have clinical implications.
