Calcium Promotes Optimal Weight Management

Researchers analyzed several previously published studies and recently reported that calcium intake supports weight loss in human subjects. Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body and is utilized in numerous physiological functions including bone structure and function, muscle contraction, nerve conduction, cell communication and blood vessel dilation. According to the National Institutes of Health, humans absorb approximately 30 percent of the calcium found in foods, and calcium absorption declines with age.

Scientists combined the data from 7 randomized clinical trials of at least 6-month duration that evaluated the impact of calcium supplementation on weight management in overweight individuals.

The data showed that compared to placebo, calcium intake resulted in a small but statistically significant reduction in body weight. Additionally, a small but significant reduction in body fat was also found with calcium intake compared to placebo.

The study authors concluded, “In conclusion, the evidence from randomized clinical trials suggests calcium supplementation generates small, statistically significant weight loss in overweight individuals, but the clinical relevance of this finding is uncertain.”
