Multinutrients May Reduce Age-Related Changes

New research has examined the effect of dietary supplements on the age-related decline in physical movements known as bradykinesis, which is considered a reliable marker of aging and mortality risk.

In this new study, mice were fed a combination of nutrients found in multinutrient formulas including vitamins B1, B3, B6, B12, C, D, E, folic acid, beta-carotene, magnesium, selenium, potassium, manganese, chromium picolinate, acetyl L-carnitine, rutin, bioflavonoids, green tea extract, alpha-lipoic acid and N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) plus CoQ10, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, garlic, L-glutathione, melatonin, cod liver oil and flax seed oil. The supplement was dosed based on recommended human consumption and adjusted for body size and the increased metabolic rate of mice. The mice were analyzed for activity as well as for levels of free radicals produced from the mitochondria. Neuropeptide Y, a neurotransmitter found in the brain that is important in energy balance, memory and learning, was also measured.

The results showed that the mice receiving the dietary supplement showed no change in daily locomotion while the untreated mice had a 50 percent decline in activity. The mice that received the dietary supplement also showed a reduction in free radical production from the mitochondria by 50 percent, decreased oxidative stress and increased neuropeptide Y levels in the brain compared to the mice in the control group.

The researchers stated, “Although identifying the role of specific ingredients and interactions remains outstanding, results provide proof of principle that complex dietary cocktails can powerfully ameliorate biomarkers of aging and modulate mechanisms considered ultimate goals for aging interventions.”

To match the nutrients given in the study, a recommended approach is to combine Extend Plus with CoQ10-H2™, Ginkgo Biloba, Ginseng Plus, AlliTru®, Liposomal glutathione, melatonin, flaxseed oil and Ethyl EPA.
